A denture, often known as a full or partial denture, is an appliance that is placed into the mouth to replace natural teeth and give support for the cheeks and lips.
Most dentures are composed of acrylic and may be manufactured in two ways.
- After all teeth have been removed and the tissues (gums) have healed, a typical denture is created.
- An instantaneous denture is made and placed soon after the teeth are removed, allowing the tissues to recover underneath the denture.
- An upper denture is made of acrylic that is typically flesh-colored and covers the palate (roof of the mouth).
- To provide space for the tongue, a lower denture is fashioned like a horseshoe.
Plastic, porcelain, or a mix of the two is used to make the teeth. Dentures may be made to fit over endodontically treated teeth, and a full denture can be connected to dental implants for a more stable fit.
Dentures will wear out over time and will need to be changed or relined in order to maintain proper jaw alignment. The alignment will gradually alter when the bone and gum ridges recede or decrease as a result of tooth extraction. Denture wearers should still have regular dental exams so that the oral tissues may be examined for illness or alteration.
